This calls for some explanation. My girlfriend is from Poland. She grew
up behind the Iron Curtain. One day we were talking about history (as
we often do) and I mentioned the poignant and humbling the 2500 year old
marker at Thermopylae. This simple marker commemorates an epic event of
bravery and sacrifice that still resonates two and a half millennia
later.
My girlfriend knew the words by heart. This
she had been taught as a child in Poland while living in a totalitarian
and oppressed state. They remembered. So this is for her.
